TISSUE PATCHES (BIOENGINEERING OF ANIMALDERIVED COLLAGEN FOR SURGICAL PURPOSES) 

The collagen used in this technology is a naturally occurring protein that is ubiquitous in the mammalian species, and this accounts for almost 30% of all their body proteins. It also has functional and structural properties that can support cell growth, which is why this product is now a favourite substrate for use in tissue engineering.  Currently, collagen-based materials have been used extensively in bio-engineered medical devices for cardiovascular, orthopaedic surgery, and other tissue replacement. Recent advancements have eliminated many problems associated with early applications of animal-derived collagen-based materials. 
 
Its main source, based from the name, is derived from animals. Given this, extensive processing and engineering is required before this tissue patches can be utilised or applied in humans. Mamprotech’s initial focus for this product will be in the abdominal hernia and pelvic floor reconstruction as these are some of the most common medical problems that potentially will require collagen-based products. The company hopes to expand their application using this product during their second year of operations. Their goal is to reach many other clinical settings such as the following:
